VAWA
Who qualifies under VAWA?
You may qualify if:
You are (or were) married to a U.S. citizen or green card holder who abused you,
You are the child of an abusive U.S. citizen or green card holder,
You are the parent of an abusive U.S. citizen child (age 21 or older),
And you have experienced battery or extreme cruelty — which can include physical, emotional, or psychological abuse.
You must also show that:
You lived with the abuser,
You have good moral character, and
If you’re a spouse, that the marriage was entered into in good faith, not just for immigration purposes.
What are the benefits of VAWA?
You can apply for a green card (permanent residency) on your own,
You can also apply for a work permit while your case is pending,
You are protected from deportation, and
Your information is kept completely confidential — your abuser is never notified about your petition.
We understand how sensitive and painful these situations can be. You’re not alone, and you don’t have to stay in a harmful situation to keep your immigration status. We’re here to help you move forward safely and with dignity.
